HISTORY OF THE CPL

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is a Twenty20 cricket tournament every year in the Caribbean region. Cricket West Indies established it in 2013 to take over as the flagship Twenty20 competition in the Caribbean region, replacing the Caribbean Twenty20. Hero MotoCorp presently sponsors it, and as a result, it is officially known as the Hero CPL (Hero Crash Protection League).

The Jamaica Tallawahs won the first event after defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the championship game in Kingston. The most recent edition, CPL 2021, was won by St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, who defeated the St Lucia Kings by three wickets in the final.

PRIOR WINNERS OF THE CPL

Since the competition’s start in 2013, there have only been four teams that have successfully won the trophy. While the Trinbago Knight Riders won the championship four times, the Jamaica Tallawahs and the Barbados Tridents won twice. After winning the Caribbean Premier League in 2021, St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots were added to the list.

The following is the CPL champions list broken down by season:

  • 2013 – Jamaica Tallawahs
  • 2014 – Barbados Tridents
  • 2015 – Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel
  • 2016 – Jamaica Tallawahs
  • 2017 – Trinbago Knight Riders
  • 2018 – Trinbago Knight Riders
  • 2019 – Barbados Tridents
