Federal Govt Decides to Remove HEC Chairman – HEC Chairman Dr. Tariq Banuri
Federal Govt Decides to Remove HEC Chairman as a result of the Federal Government’s decision to replace current HEC Chairman Dr. Tariq Banuri with a new appointee, an advertisement for the position of HEC Chairman was published by the Federal Government. This indicates that the Federal Government is searching for candidates to fill the position of HEC Chairman.
The Federal Ministry of Education put out the advertisement following the recently enacted Amendment Act, which specifies that the new Chairman would have a term of office of two years. A committee to choose the next Chairman of the HEC has been formed, and the Federal Minister for Education, Rana Tanveer, will serve as the Committee’s Chairman.
Some of the current Vice-Chancellors of some of Pakistan’s most prestigious public universities serve on the Committee. These individuals include the Vice-Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University, Dr. Zia-ul-Qayyum, the Vice-Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah University Rawalpindi, and Dr. Saima Hamid, and the Vice-Chancellor of Balochistan University of Technology, Dr. Farooq Baazi. Other members of the Committee include faculty members.
Dr. Tariq Banuri, the previous Chairman of the HEC, was ousted from his position under the same Act in March of the last year. His rights were restored by the Islamabad high court (IHC) ten months later, in January 2022, after he had applied to the IHC.
An intriguing aspect of this advertisement for the position of HEC Chairman is that applicants have only four days to submit their applications for the HEC chairman post together with all of the necessary paperwork, including a letter of no objection from their current institution.
The applications must be received by the 26th of May 2022 at the very latest. Many people believe this to be an unrealistic expectation because, in most circumstances, obtaining the NOC from the department takes several days. However, the Federal Government has only provided a deadline of four days for the application submissions.
It is now up to the Committee to decide, over the next few days, who will take over as the new Chairman of the HEC.
Tariq Banuri is a Pakistani academic, development economist, environmentalist, climate scientist, educationalist, human rights advocate, and author. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University, and he is currently serving as the fourth and current Chairperson of the Higher Education Commission. Banuri is also an advocate for human rights.
The Higher Education Commission, also abbreviated as HEC, is a statutory body founded in 2002 by the Government of Pakistan and is now presided over by Atta – Ur – Rehman. Its acronym in short form is the HEC.
